kisiskâciwani-sîpiy - Plant Teachings with Myra LaFrance-Goodeagle

Join Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre for a land-based learning experience with Knowledge Keeper Myra LaFrance-Goodeagle in Edmonton's River Valley. Beginning at Ociciwan, participants will walk together to the area near the Tawatinâ Bridge, where Myra will share teachings about plants, responsible gathering practices, and our relationships with the land.

Through walking, observation, and conversation, participants will be invited to consider the land as a teacher and to reflect on the responsibilities that come with gathering from it. Myra will share teachings about approaching the land with respect and reciprocity.

This free workshop is part of kisiskâciwani-sîpiy, Ociciwan's land-based workshop series exploring the North Saskatchewan River Valley through art, conversation, and community. Donations are optional but welcome! Space is limited to 15 participants. Please register on Eventbrite to reserve your spot.

Myra LaFrance-Goodeagle is a Plains Cree / Blackfoot woman born and raised in Treaty 6 and Treaty 7. Her teachings come from four generations of matriarchs, community Elders, and her lifelong relationship with Mother Earth. As the creator of Buffalo Lodge Cultural Society, teacher, social worker, and mentor, Myra brings together land-based learning, cultural knowledge, and community teaching in her work. She describes her approach as one grounded in the understanding that we walk as four directional beings, together.

Ociciwan is pleased to present kisiskâciwani-sîpiy, a series of land-based workshops taking place throughout the summer and autumn in Edmonton's River Valley. Across a number of sessions, participants are invited to gather with artists, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers. kisiskâciwani-sîpiy drives connection through walks, conversations, and creative activities that deepen our relationships with the river and the land.

Accessibility notes: This program takes place outdoors in Edmonton's River Valley. Participants will walk from Ociciwan to the workshop site and spend portions of the workshop outdoors. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing, bring water, and be prepared for changing outdoor conditions. More detailed information about the walking route and site will be provided to registered participants.
